4. Document markup

In Chapter 1 we ventured that “LaTex belongs to a family of markup languages. Some information is added to the content of the document as a markup, which defines how the document is finally built or compiled. Wikipedia defines a markup language “as a set of rules governing what markup information may be included in a document and how it is combined with the content of the document in a way to facilitate use by humans and computer programs.

Some of the elements of document markup include, instructions for

• Text alignment
• Sections and sub-sections
• Lists: bulleted, numbered, enumerate and description environments
• Inserting pictures and graphics
• Referencing elements

We consider each of these elemements on the subsequent pages.
